The artist of the week: a nice story: P.I.N.O Lopez aka DrunkMan aka MariskalAcid

This story begins thanks to my housemate, who has a huge musical culture and always shows me good music. One afternoon, I asked him if he knew a good techno DJ, and we spent the whole day listening to tracks and sessions of the artist that concerns us today, his musical style dazzled me and today I want to share it with all of you.

Music is his passion, and computing is his profession, so he allows himself to produce, play, and DJ only what he likes and nothing else.

He is also an extreme metal bassist since the mid ’90s, he has played in the groups KRYPTICY, SPITSHIT, ROTTEN GOATS, SERVI DIABOLI, TUMBA, THE DIE IS CAST, Tibetan Skullz…

He started with electronic music in the late 90’s and today he continues to DJ with CDs and vinyl, and almost half of the tracks he plays are produced by himself.

In 2005, together with J-Ka, M.J.V. and Dr. Exposito created the AstralTech ravero sounsystem being one of the pioneers in setting up raves on the Costa del Sol, Andalusia.

His record label continues to release tracks on many platforms such as SPOTIFY, ITUNES, AMAZON, BEATPORT, Juno Records, etc. AstralTech’s other digital labels are AstralNRG & AstralKickz.

Here are some of the questions I have had the pleasure of asking him:

What are your reference djs?
Lisa Pin-up, Rachell Auburn, Lisa Lashes, D.A.V.E. the Drummer, Anne Savage, Paul Glazby, Amber D, Dr Chekill, OD404, Dj Karlos, Chris Liberator, Lab-4, BK, Nick Sentience, Harry Diamond, Chris C, Andy Farley, Phil Reynolds among others.

Which style or styles defines your sound?

I generally represent the styles that no one else is playing or producing around me at the time; when everyone was playing breakbeat, I was already playing hard dance, when everyone was playing house, I was playing drum and bass, when the psytrance craze came in, I was playing Schranz… Currently what I play the most is UK Hard Dance and Acid Techno.

What is your favorite track?

Of the ones I have mine on vinyl, “La Resaka” is the one that I like the most; and in digital all mine of acid and techno humor in general.

Which producers influence you?
Lisa Pin-up, D.A.V.E. the Drummer, Defective Audio, Lucy Fur, Organ Donors, Paul Glazby, Chris Liberator, Lab-4, BK, Nick Sentience, Harry Diamond, Chris C, Andy Farley, Phil Reynolds, Nick Rowland, Mauro Picotto, Livio Tracks, Pzylo, Pio Lernihan, Pierz Tremaine, Rene Reiter, Ali Wilson, Matt Smallwood, Yves Deruyter, Showtek, Dean Peters, Pranksterz…

Which artists have you shared lineups with?

I have had the pleasure of playing music at raves, parties or festivals with great artists like Robert Natus, J-Ka, M.J.V., D.A.V.E. The Drummer, Dr Exposito, The Geezer, Rackitt, Dr Chekill, Alex Calver, Banga Matt, Scott Kemix, Ganez The Terrible, J. Walker, Aaron Liberator, Maxx, Hard Bart, Jimmy Van de Velde, eRRe, DarkLine, Venganza, Oscar Mulero, Christian Varela, James Ruskin, Voisson, Memo, Dj Karlos, Felipe Volumen, Warren, Pellejo, Alex Morr, Ag26, Dub Elements, Oxtremo, Alkaloid23, Nonombreak, Joan, Felo, Alme, Riuk, LongBeat, Family Destroyer, Mort, Khemia, Laura Core, Little Sick, and so many more.

What is your favorite club?
Any club in Valencia or Barcelona, where you can feel free playing what you like more without the typical guy coming to the booth asking for commercial music.

What has been the event where you have most enjoyed DJing?

My first bowling in London in 2001 and in all the raves in Spain in which I have played in the last 20 years.

Here are some of his tracks and sessions:

The artist of the week: Random Stuff

Two years ago, mid-September and after hearing the news of the formation of Matriz, a new collective in Granada, attracted by the quality of the line up of one of their events, I went to one of the legendary clubs of Granada, Sala El Tren, to listen to the headliner, Freddy K; But what was my surprise that as soon as I entered on the club, the decks were turning in the hands of Randon Stuff, who did the warm-up and who was one of the organizers of the event. It didn’t take long for me to catch the good sound and the good work of this Dj, who delighted us with a great EBM session, industrial, and some electro to start the night.

I have had the opportunity of interviewing him and sharing with all of you some of the questions that I have had the pleasure of asking him:

What are your origins in electronic music?

My origins in electronic music were when I was 8 or 9 years old, buying my first cassettes with the pay my parents gave me on weekends, mostly makina music and techno.

Which are your reference djs?

My reference djs among all of them has always been Oscar Mulero because of his techno and his mixing style, but if I have to name any more they would be Regis or Surgeon.

Which style or styles defines your sound?

Within techno, I am quite open in terms of sub-styles, but I have always been attracted to the more raw and industrial sounds such as the Birmingham school.

Which is your favorite track?

It is difficult to choose a favorite song but one of the ones that have cost me the most to get on vinyl and a mythical one that never fails in a session could be the Work by James Ruskin remixed by Steve Rachmad.

Which producers influence you?

My reference producers at the moment are as much together as Exium or half of them separately, Tensal or Komatsu for the amount of music that they bring out of authentic quality in different variants of techno or electro and almost everything on vinyl…they never fail.

What is your favorite club and why?

My favorite club is hard to say but since it was where I grew up listening to techno and where I have seen my biggest idols is Family Club in Toledo, that’s where I discovered that I loved this style.

What has been the event where you have most enjoyed DJing?

One of the sessions that I enjoyed the most was a Matrix Showcase at the Macarena Club (Barcelona) in the session of my friend Anika Kunst “Selectors” with her and my partner Dzeko.

What are your projects?

My current project is Matriz, a collective / promoter of events in which the form of musical expression is always vinyl, I share it with my partner Dzeko and some artists both musical and from various artistic disciplines in which I have been involved for more than 2 years.

Here you can listen to a few nice sets:

The artist of the week: Borvac

If the lockdown of last year brought me something good, it was the opportunity to enjoy good streams and meet new DJs. Such is the case of Borja V Charlin (Borvac), who is born in Galicia and settled in Germany. His dark and forceful techno sessions made me forget the situation at hand and made me enjoy myself as if I were in a club.

Currently, I have had the opportunity to interview him, and I share with all of you some of the questions that I had the pleasure of asking him.

What are your origins in electronic music?

It can be said that there is a mix of everything in my influences. The first contact I had with electronic music was quite early, I was 9 or 10 years old and I remember listening to a  Scorpia CD, in my parents’ bar (makina music). I didn’t have a computer or internet at that time and I was still a child so I couldn’t find out much about it either. But as I got older, and taking into account that my friends were much older than me and most of them listened to electronics, I came into contact with the hardtechno. But somehow it didn’t fill me at all, I needed something different. Little by little I have been evolving until I discovered techno and I said to myself: I really like this. I could say that one of the tracks that introduced me to techno would be Work by James Ruskin, which I was very excited to acquire physically about two years ago when my finances allowed me to get hold of two turntables decks
In summary, my career as a listener began with makina music, going through hardtechno, then house, until it ended in what defines me today as techno.

Which are your reference djs?
The aforementioned James Ruskin, and also many others such as Cristian Varela, Freddy K, Ben Sims, Surgeon, Truncate, Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin …

Which style or styles defines your sound?
With techno, especially 90s techno and modern techno that retains that old school touch. I like tracks that don’t evolve much, quite repetitive. From my point of view, it is the dj who has to create that evolution or transition between the songs.

Which is your favorite track?
I have a lot actually, but if I had to pick one I’d say Reeko’s Crop Circle

Which producers influence you?
There are a huge number of producers that make my ears happy. Today I could highlight artists that I follow very closely and who are bringing new generations with great force such as Not a Headliner, Alarico, Atonism, Arkan, Yant, Kaiser, Troy, Yant, Kwartz, Marcal,
And from the classics, I would highlight James Ruskin, Groof, Bando, The Advent, Bandulu, Steve Rachmad, Brother’s Yard, Umek, Damon Wild, Mhonolink, Robert Hood, Lars Klein, Marco Carola, Frank Biazzi, Akira Ishihara …

What is your favorite club and why?
My favorite club and surely the one of the great majority is Berghain (Berlin). It is a necromantic and seductive place. What is lived in there is not lived in any other place in the world. You feel free, nobody looks at you strangely because of the outfit you are wearing or because of the way you act; there is a sincere union between people for culture, where no one is superior to anyone; There are no problems in there, only happiness and ecstasy. It’s magic. I have spent 30 or so hours without leaving there and the return to reality hurts a lot.
Being able to play there would be a dream for me.

What has been the event where you have most enjoyed DJing?
It is not that I have a long journey, but I would not know whether to say the first Blöck event (Madrid) in which I played or in The Jungle Dance Floor (León). In both places I have felt at home thanks to the welcome and gratitude of the people.

What are your projects?
I have been involved in several projects, I am currently focused on the Communion Circuit podcast channel and soon I will present together with my good friend Slin a new project called Samba Massacre, where we perform face to face using 2 mixers and 4 turntables decks, taking creativity to a level beyond.

Here you can listen to a compilation of some of his best sets:

Thanks Borja, we hope to listen to you soon on the dance floor!
